"Stereotypes" ALL have their roots in some actual observable propensity at the time within any group of people. That's where they come from. But once they are born, they tend to persist far longer than that observed (often transient) propensity itself.
In the 1920's and 1930's, American Basketball was completely dominated by Jewish players, leading to a stereotype that Jews were "naturally talented at basketball" along with all the anticipated suggestions about Jewish people that such an absurd notion would give rise to. America is doing the same thing today with black people.

i think they CAN be true, but here you run into the problem, a stereotype can be for say 51 % of a people, and the other 49% be decent law abiding folks..is it fair to paint the whole lot by the same brush rather than giving credit where credit is due? for the good and the bad?
however there are some folks who take great pride in living UP top the stereotype for their people so when they get called on it they can cop out. it gives em a reason to ***** and fight for an imagined insult where none was to begin with. it's an excuse to get aggressive either verbally or physically and not take proper responsibility for their own actions. .
having said this..we're all human and make mistakes..so..i'll not say which i know to be true and which are not because for the most part it's pure opinion and i am not in a mood to get screwed with over my opinion.

I'll probably get thumbs-downed to Hell for saying this, but...
All stereotypes come from a grain of truth, they don't come out of no where, of course there are members of a group going against the stereotype, fighting it, making things better. Take the black gang-banger stereotype - There are many great African Americans fighting this stereotype, there are also those in the ghetto, and the "gangsta rappers" who uphold this stereotype, who "prove" it true.
Take several of the common high-school stereotypes - The preps, the goths, etc. They (like all stereotypes) typically only represent the scum of the group, but let's examine them - the prep type of "oh mee gawd I broked my nailz" - That does exist, and there are enough upholding it - Same with the "I'm so dark and hardcore" type of "Goth" - Like all stereotypes, there are members of the group rejecting it, resisting it, but there are those upholding it. Whether it be of a social group, a race, or any other group you can make fun of - Stereotypes will occur based on common attributes.

Stereotypes are generalizations, and the only generalization I believe is true is that there are no generalizations that are true.
Debunking stereotypes:
For those who say "White people can't dance," I say "Michael Jackson and Christopher Walken."
For those who say "XXXXXXXXXXXXXX," I say "Ron Jeremy and John Holmes."
To the girl above: Oh yeah, Barack Obama is a really angry guy. So is Al Sharpton. Also, don't even try talking to Oprah Winfrey. You don't want to step on Stevie Wonder's toes either.

It's not that the stereo type is true or false, it's that some people are willing to live up to the stereo type & make it seem true.
This of course refers to negative stereo types.
I mean the stereo type that blondes are hot is lived up to by my wife who is both blonde & hot.
Thus I think you should make a concious decision to live up to a stereo type or not. Put your fate in your hands not others.

No stereotype is completely true, but they can be. However you should not generalize people based on that stereotype. Like for instance dumb blondes, my girlfriend is blonde and she is an honours student, there ya go. Sexy and smart
