My daughter hit a car accidentally on the right from end side.
we decided, the other driver and myself, that i would take car of it out of pocket. he drove his car around a parking lot, backed up went side to side...and then left and went to work

He then calls and says it is the drive shaft bent and it will cost $500.00 to fix, so I tell him just take it in have it fixed and when you pick it up I will put the charges on my cc. He then says no, that will not work becauase he is just going to do it himself from parts from a junk yard equalling $400.00 and 100.00 for himself...so just give him $500.00 and we will call it even...the car is a 87-88 datsun wagon ...all primed gray and showing its age...should I just pay him and call it a day...or look into this farther as I feel he is attempting to extort money from me, rather than just be honest.

It can be driven but it will cause a severe driveline vibration. Theres also no way you could have bent the drive shaft by hitting the outside of his car without slamming the wheel and disturbing the rear end enough to tweak the shaft.

He can threaten to call the insurance company if he wants, so be careful. Sounds like hes trying to take you for a ride already.

How Fast was she going when she hit the Car? That Car is a "Rear Wheel Drive", Drive-Shaft is 4" to 5" Reinforced Tube. To Hit the car and bend the drive-Shaft you'd have to hit it Extremely Hard Damaging the Rear End and Major Rear fender Damage and the Cost would be well over $2,000 even for that Car! SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH WHAT HE SAYS?

Tell him you need to get it to a Body Shop to have them Check it! (Or No Deal!)

NOTE; If the Drive-Shaft is Bent, Even a Little the Vibration would be So Bad it would be "All But Undrivable!" SOUNDS LIKE HE MAY BE TRYING TO PULL SOMETHING!!

Who says it wasn't bent before? There's no way I'd give him the $100. I'd buy the part and give it to him. You're entitled to at least 2 quotes, I'd get another one, as a used driveshaft isn't that expensive for a 180/200B. The whole car isn't worth that. How did the shaft get bent? sounds suss to me. There would have to be a lot of other damage to bend a driveshaft from hitting it in the Left rear quarter. The diff in those is bolted to the chassis, and the rear suspension is independent both sides on double(?) wishbones. you'd have to bend the whole car to bend the tailshaft, and I can't see an easy way of denting it, which would be serious, as it would prob. break, eventually. If he means an axle, they're not $400 ea used either, perhaps $150-$200! Buy axle in both halves together, they're matched and have ballance marks for assembly. You don't have to pay local prices, there are interstate wreckers who'll ship it to you. Your paying, you choice of where it comes from. Surrender that at your peril!

think you could go and get it and do it yourself for like 50 bucks sound like you getting the shaft..... man it take like 15 minutes to do that job and you need only a 10 mm and a jack do it your self and save 450 bucks.... and really if she hit the car hard enough to bend the drive shaft then the car would be a wreck things would be hanging off and bent id say undriveable not...... he is just wanting some money and you look like a sucker to get it from

I'd pay him the $500 and tell your daughter to be more careful when she drives.
Are you sure it wasn't a c.v. joint ? A c.v. joint would cost more to replace than a drive shaft.
If he takes it to a shop, they could say fix the fender and other damaged parts.
Chances are your insurance could jump because of your daughter.
The $500 could be an inexpensive way out.

You can't drive a car with a bent drive shaft, it's dangerous and you may end up with worse mechanical problems because of it.

Call your car insurance agent and tell them the complete story from scratch. They will give you good advice about how to handle this. Don't proceed otherwise. It can only get worse for you without proper counseling.

I would just pay him the 500 & call it a day. You are getting off very lucky. He could easily say screw you & take to a shop & have it repaired, believe me it would cost far more than 500.

you are entitled to estimates of his damage from a reputable shop...If he refuses to let you do that, then he is scamming you and I would seriously think about pressing charges on him for extortion..the estimate should be free by the way..

he is totally trying to take advantage of your decency - demand an estimate from an authorized automechanic and if he doesnt tell him to take you to court
