As we realize that we have to greatly reduce the global population, what are some ideas for how to do it?

Well we do need to lower population but before that we need to identify which regions really need to be capped first...because globe is divide into thickly and scarcely populated zones.
For overly populated zones like asia, international community should think of resettlement of these populations ina zone where there is more population so in away immigartion laws should be more relaxed and the domestic government can levy taxes, give penutative punishments, and provide subsidies and incentives to control population.

Well, the best way to decrease the world's population is for people to choose to have only one child. Most couples want two on average. Even so, if people only choose to have two, it would at least stabilize the population explosion, then of course, there are many who would die young without children. That would decrease the population. Any ideas would take centuries to take. The worst ideas would be to regulate the number of children a couple can have. Once you get lawmakers involved, you start making certain sci-fi movies (among them "Fortress" starring Christopher Lambert), come true. People don't need to have eight kids. I hve two myself, and at 36, I don't plan on having any more.

Don't know. Governments can't go around sterilizing men and women. Birth control methods
could be handed out for free - but you can't force people to use them. People are living to an older age due to medical advances - but you can't kill seniors.
There is still a lot of uninhabited land in the world -
just need to give people an incentive to move there (such as large corporations placing mfg. plants in these areas).
