We try to give to those in need - sometimes it is filling a couple of Shoe boxes for the Samaritans purse shoe box appeal, other years have given toys to families who wouldn't have, other years we get our missionaries to annoymously deliver a box of food or clothing to someone. We also invite single members from our church to come and have dinner with us. We spend the day listening to hymns. We have decided to start a new tradition this year - before we start eating we are going to read christmas scriptures.
We still do christmas stockings for all the family, and we can open one present on Christmas eve - or earlier if the wrapping has been badly damaged in being posted.
We also buy a new Christmas decoration - a nice one rather than something from Asda or £land - to remember our last 2 dogs who both died at christmas (it started cos mum was really down the year after the second dog died and I bought her one to cheer her up and have done every year since)

that is so cute! i was going to post a question, why we don't sing happy birthday to jesus instead of xmas carols. lol
anyway, we do a "few" things. each year we invent a new one. most of these are either free, or help someone else.
1. we go to xmas at citadel hill. it's our old fort all done up in period times, the ppl do old carols, stories, games of yore. the kids go on a scavenger hunt, there's a place to get lunch (soldier's stew one year). there's a europen st nick and wife. it costs a food bank donation to attend.
2. we do a "free skate" put on by our tim hortons (coffee shop). it seems like the whole community turns out to these things. they have xmas carols playing, and always faith hills, "where are u xmas?". it's an hour, or maybe 2. alot of fun. you usually see kids from your school, or neighbourhood. nice way to get in touch.
3. this one is from when i was a kid. on xmas eve we'd order pizza or chinese food. then on new year's eve we'd order the opposite. always gotta order pork fried rice! later on we added a tradition where we would try one unknown dish. don't think that will be possible anymore, we've tried em all!
4. not an xmas tradition, but close enuf. the past 2 years, we've spent new year's eve at friends, loaded up on authentic chinese food! mm..so that means pizza for xmas eve...
5. we always tried to go on a sleigh ride. not much snow this year so far, so might have to put that on back burner
6. son always attends the "xmas camp", he gets 3 hours of fun, and i get a well needed break!
7. we always go around looking at the xmas lights. we used to have a guy that did up his whole yard (he had a business so it was a really big "yard"), with all kinds of xmas decorations. but he stopped doing it a few years ago. he had a huge light bill i recall.
8. we are going to try to rent national lampoons xmas vacation. sitting around watching xmas shows/movies always rocks. esp with eggnog and munchies. seen ernest saves christmas the other day. hilarious
9.we put up our stockings, and the smallest one i can find, for "the mouse that lives in the house".
i think that's most of them...i gotta go bake a cake..my son will love playing happy birthday on the synthesiser for baby jesus!

I think we may have started a new one, this year. My friend gave us a bottle of wine, and we don't own a cork-screw. Needless to say, half-hour later, a busted nuckle,a claw hamer, and my cordless drill.......we gotter done!.....The wine sucked!...lol
