What if Barry Sanders played two more years? If he had gained his average of 1530 yards a season for two more years, he would have gained a total of 18323, which would have essentially put the rushing record out of reach for nearly anybody. If he did, would he be remembered as the greatest ever?

Emmett wan't very effective at the end of his career, I don't think he would have caught Barry Sanders if he played any longer.

What a selfless act, not telling his team he was going to retire so they didn't have time to find a good replacement.

Doesn't matter. Only diehard Cowboys fans think that Emmit is better than Barry Sanders.

Emmit played with the Cards because he didn't have anything else to play for but his record and he wouldn't have been the starters anywhere else.

If not the best ever, he's definitely a top 3. His average per carry was 5.0 in a team with no passing game confirms it.

Then he would be a good among men. To this day, Sanders is my favorite and most explosive running back to ever play the game. Adrian Peterson learned quite a bit from Barry.

career rushing leader or not, Mr. Sanders is the best RB to ever play the game. i read alot about him being an o-line killer & only after stats but the man was truely amazing.

taking a knee on his NFL career so he wouldn't pass the Great Mr. Payton was probably his greatest feat & the greatest selfless act in the history of the NFL.

If a bullfrog had wings, ....well...you know.
Anyway, if Sanders would have played 2 more years, Emmitt would have played 2 more years, and things would still be virtually the same.
Sanders was ONE of the best runners of all time...but no matter how hard you try, the record will still be held by Emmitt Smith.

He still should be considered the greatest. He didn't want to surpass his idol Walter Payton. I think it was a noble gesture.

hell, I wish he'd come back now (wouldn't take all that much for him to get back into shape), especially if he signed with the Steelers or Seahawks
