what message does that deliver? isn't it supposed to be the responsibility of Azhar to protect the churches not the police?

Azhar is like the Vatican of the Muslims!

When our president decides to lift the state if emergency he imposed on Egypt years ago.
Until then all public gatherings including Friday prayers are subject to military surveillance and "protection"
Its bizarre and unnecessary, but I guess it is giving the conscripted soldiers something to do besides drills and road blocks.Every time I drive from the West bank to the East bank to Luxor I have to go through a road block and show my passport and even marriage papers(?).
Can you believe that I was once driving with my husband and we were asked for our marriage licence, by an 18 yr old conscript wielding his power.
Now tell me,what one earth have our morals got to do with homeland security.

@kalooka-good question
@moonrise- great points

Azhar doesn't have the means to protect the people/Church's.

this should answer the question, think of the money the Salafi/Wahhabi countries have to propagate their version of Islam, not just money but the sheer organisation in the way that they spread the education is really organised (i have some models of how they spread it, if anyone wants me to send them via e-mail). I'm not saying that its just these countries and ideologies that do harm but most terrorists have a link of education from those countries or find refuge in those countries.

Azhar is battling against a tide and a strong one, to try and stop the intolerance but it can only do so much, with the means that it has.

Also many of the Egyptian billionaires and millionaires are Copts and they hold a lot of power in trying to protect people.

Its sad that the message delivered is protection but rather that than something bad happens to innocent people.

Azhar doesnt have the means to protect churches.
it can guide the people by addressing them in the Friday speech in mosques.
there are a few in Egypt who try to start a fight between moslems and christians .
this is dangerous and artificial.
the population is made of both moslems and christians.
we have always lived peacefully side by side.
but dirty hands are working in the dark to destroy this togetherness and make the country an arena of civil war like Lebanon .
we should be alert and not allow this to happen .
we would all pay a heavy price if we allow it to take place.
God forbid .
so, the police are necessary to control the situation .
God bless Egypt.

actually these soldiers are providing nothing but decorations!!
what can a soldier or two do in case of any riots??nothing.
what we both need is mutual understanding and respect not soldiers.so i really think these soldiers deliver one message the regime is trying to tell the copts;" you need me to protect you " which is absolutely untrue. protection comes ONLY from mutual respect and care
