Irene Morgan Kirkaldy.

Never, heard of her? Long before Rosa Parks, Irene Morgan found herself in the same situation - getting forced out of her seat on the bus so that a white person could have it.

Ms. Morgan did not go quietly... won her case in court (which instigated the Freedom Rides) and had songs written about her. Follow the link for an interesting history lesson.

She died this year.

[Goodnight Irene... I'll see you in my dreams]

Hazrat Khadija (may God be pleased with her) wife of the Holy Prophet of Islam (saw). She was his employer and so impressed with his honesty and good nature that she proposed marriage to him. He was 25 years old virgin and she was a 40 year old widow, not a great beauty and not a virgin either. He was embarrassed by her attention but eventually agreed and married her. She was a highly successful businesswoman who possessed great acumen. Of her own volition, she handed her businesses over to the Holy Prophet (saw) so he could oversee operations and then give profits to the poor and needy as he wished.

When he received his first revelation from God via the Angel Gabriel, he was 40 years old and returned home from the revelation shaking in shock. Hazrat Khadija (may God be pleased with her) comforted him and told him that she believed him as he had never lied to her or anyone. She decided to accept Islam and thus became the first Muslim, after her husband (saw).

She gave birth to a few children but many died except for one daughter (Hazrat Fatima, may God be pleased with her) who outlived both her mother and father.

The year that Hazrat Khadija died was described by the Holy Prophet (saw) as his "year of grief". He married soon after out of duty to his community to women who had been divorced, women who had lost their husbands in wars fought in defence against anti-Islamic oppressors, etc as he was to set the example that these women were not to be piled on the dustheap but should be able to have a marriage partner in their lives. He never had any sordid affairs but married willing women who were in need of a husband.

Only one of his wives was a virgin. She once asked him why he so fondly remembered his first wife as she was old and not as good looking as her. He replied that he had loved Hazrat Khadija (may God be pleased with her) deeply because of how she had been with him throughout their marriage and especially how she had stood fast with him at a time when many rejected him.

Her life proved that women are not showpieces but great contributors to society in family and in business. She enjoyed prosperity but also lived with dignity when in abject poverty. She also showed Muslim men that it is not a virgin but a virtuous woman that they should seek for marriage. She was was remarkable.
