We want to put new skirting boards in, but there are unsightly pipes under the rads, which run along the top of the existing narrow skirting, can you buy moulding or special skirting that will cover the pipes?
Thanking you in advance

Hi,

Yes I believe you can buy plastic covers for radiator pipes but what I always do is t cut the plaster well back into the wall then bed the pipes in the groove.
Then put the skirting back.

To make a nice job, cut a groove up the wall to bury the pipe until you need to come out of the wall to connect to the radiator.

It looks really neat.

You can buy plastic sections that will replace most wood moldings but they are not specfically designed for your purpose and would probably need to be modified. However, they are easy to cut and many have cavities or are hollow section which may cover your pipes if they are small bore pipes and not the old 1/2 inch copper.See; http://www.decorative-coving.co.uk/products.php?cat_id=6&subcat_id=10&clear=1

pendock make a curved coated profile, not very skirting like though.
otherwise custom made boxing with skirting mounted in front and maybe on top so it looks like deep board, may look edwardian/victorian with a lot of mouldings so it depends on what you like.

you wouldnt cut your pipes into an OUTSIDE wall though would you. or indeed cut more than 1/6th of the depth. also putting them behind skirting is asking for trouble if someone decides to nail it at some stage

its quite simple and as a builder we cover them all the time ...buy a length of 2 by 1 and fix this to the wall at TOP of skirting board level ..cutting out for the pipes ..then fix another at floor level ..then fix skirting's to that ..the pipes are now in between the skirting

be careful about putting things under or infront of the radiator that might inhibit the airflow, you can make the heating much less effective, and excessive heat build up can cause damage to the surrounding area, excessively drying out nearby wood, as it has pipes and isn't electric, fire shouldn't be too much of a worry. Just be cautious and leave plenty of ventilation

"boy boy " has it.
I personally have diverted the pipework under the floor, and removed the offending horizontal pipes. I have even put them into an internal cavity behind the sheetrock ( plasterboard.), using plastic pipe, and drilling through the wood uprights.
