Romans used boughs of evergreens to symbolize life over death in their celebrations of the fest of Saturnalia, honoring the god of agriculture. Druids used mistletoe and holly to symbolize eternal life in their rituals, and Germans used to place evergreen trees inside their houses and outside their front doors in anticipation of the spring to follow. The tree has many different meanings for Christians. It's triangular shape represents the Holy Trinity, the branches are raised up towards the heavens like praying hands and the star placed at the top reminds one of the star of Bethlehem. Hope the was helpful.

It means the person is celebrating Christmas (the birth of Jesus actually, did you know that?) in a reasonably traditional way. The custom goes all the way back to Martin Luther, or Queen Victoria, according to which story you read.
