let me offer a perspective of a Buddhist monk:
compassion, kindness and love toward our brothers and sisters... life has no meaning without compassion for others...
as it gives it both meaning and purpose...
1 infinite gratitude toward our ancestors
2 infinite respect toward our contemporaries
3 infinite responsibility toward others who will follow us
and let me also offer a perspective from a very renown atheist, one I actually heard in person, Bertrand Russell, he was asked in one of his lectures the question you just posed... his answer, and I quote:
"without assumed existence of God, life has no intrinsic meaning, and the question makes no sense..."

TO help others in distress either physically or emotionally. The purpose is for yourself to know that you can learn and grow to find out that things arent always as good as you want them to be but use what you have learned to help others in need. We are all born with a purpose still yet to find what mine is but some I have found out is to use what little skills I have right here in q & a. Answering deep seeded questions and answering to the best of my abilty..I know I have saved one man's life and he still reminds me of it.He was on the brink of callin it quits and I talked him outta it.So just one kind word and show affection will mean alot.
