My college rooomate and I do not get along at all, we come from different backgrounds and income levels and never see eye-to-eye. However, a mutual friend came to our room right before break. My roomie was not in the dorm so the girl wanted to wait. I then started packing my clothes and had my back turned to this girl while still making conversation. The girl turned on my roomies flat iron and started using it. I wasn't paying attention and didn't see her do this. My roomie came in, the girl apologized and I thought that was the end. But the next day my roomies flat iron didn't work and the mutual friend refused to pay for all of it. My roomie now thinks it was my responsibility because I was in the room and this girl was "more my friend than hers". I do not believe it is my responsibility, and though i feel sympathy I do not feel obliged to pay for it. My roomie has been calling me "sick, twisted, selfish, and a rich b****" for not doing this.

I should add that I have told her I am not paying for this, but I wanted to know other peoples opinions on this.

hmmm..tell you what, dump the user that used the flat iron, go to the thrift shop or second hand store, purchase a cheap flat iron, tell the roomie to put her things away when she leaves, because you are not responsible for any ones actions but your own. The user was there to see the room mate, not you, you were nice enough to allow her to wait. Ask the roomer if she doesn't want HER friends in, then say so, because after this, there will be no more replacements due to her friends visiting her..Remind your roommate that the girl was there to see her, not you, and you were nice enough, and if she wants to start tossing around childish names, she should grow the F up and get over herself.

Tricky situation since you did let the girl into the room and allow her to stay. Still I don't think you are responsible for what she did, since you weren't paying attention. I doubt if just turning on the iron could have totally ruined it anyway.
If your roomie is calling you names and being abusive I would go to housing and tell them, and ask for a new one immediately.

No I don't think you should pay for it, but I do think you should apologize for letting her use the iron without his permision. But if he continues to harass, and you already asked him to stop, you should report him, if you don't, this situation can escalate to a very different situation than before. Trust me there are some crazy a_ss B_itches in this world!

The visitor used it without permission, presumably she broke it while using it.
