Enter the IP address for that router in your browser (use the numbers instead of a web site name). For Linksys it is something like 192.168.1.0 (look in the manual or on their web site if that is not correct).

You are then communicating directly with the wireless router. A menu will show on your screen. Go to the screen that lets you do passwords and set one up.

First, find out the address of the router. A quick way in windows is Start/Run/cmd. and run ipconfig. Look fo rthe default gateway. Now enter that address in your browser. For example, it might be http://192.168.1.1. If promptd to log in, the default for linksys used to be leaving the name bland and using admin for the password. You might need to used admin for both user and password.

From there, navigate the options to change the values as you desire. One saved, they will persists a power failure or unplugging the device.

If you manage to change the password and forget it, you can reset everything back to default by locating and pressing a button on the router.

Find out from your router manufacturer how to access your router settings. From there, go to the wireless settings section. I recommend using WEP because it is the most compatible, so more types of computers will be able to access your network (with the right code, of course!). The router should ask which type of WEP you want. 128-bit is more secure, but has a longer code. 64-bit is slightly less secure with a shorter code to remember. Have the router generate a WEP keycode, and take note of it (this is the code to wirelessly accessing your network). Save the settings, double check the keycode, and exit. The next time you access your network wirelessly, it should ask for a code. You must use the one that you took note of earlier.

Go here to set or change the administrator password:

http://192.168.0.1/cgi-bin/webcm?getpage=../html/qs_rem_mgmt.html&var:conname=connection0&var:contype=pppoa

Then go here if you want to prevent others from using your network and set a WEP key:

http://192.168.0.1/cgi-bin/webcm?getpage=../html/wireless_setup.html&var:conname=connection0&var:contype=pppoa

If you do the second step then you will need to go into the configuration of each of your computers and type the same WEP key into the wireless setup for that computer.

If it fails to connect you may need to log into your router first or change the IP address above to match the "Default Gateway" address on one of your connected computers.
