What happens is that you fit some profile of students the colleges might be interested in - either you go to a high school from which they have gotten students before, you have a GPA above a certain level, you are a member of some kind of an academic organization (NHS or similar) or you have applied for information from someone they see as appealing to people similar to those they want to attract. Something like that. They have then purchased a list of email addresses for such people. Lucky you; you are on the list! They can't afford to send email to everyone, so they find targeted lists, but that doesn't always mean that if you were to apply, you would get in. It just means that something about your background caught their attention.

It is never too early to start planning your future. Those colleges probably see your age and know you many be thinking about college soon and want to send you info persuading you to pick them
When you do CATS/ACT testing and stuff all of those scores are sent to the state. They have your info and that's how colleges get your info. It is not a conspiracy it is America trying to keep up w/ its youths needs and promoting education.

Hey, im a Jr in Highschool too. Many colleges send emails to kids mainly because they need more applicants and funding. They get your information from college prep programs, like if you took the PSAT at your school, etc. They bascially send it to anyone, unless your really good at a paticular sport and scouts are looking for you.

A lot of the info they get is from standardized testing, or if your parents attended. I get TONS from University of Chicago b/c my dad went there and I did well on the PSAT/ACT. However, even if you don't get noticed for that kind of stuff, lots of colleges will still send out random bits of info, e-mails, or brochures in the mail hoping to get you to look into them.

i know i got a lot of stuff from colleges because before i took my act i filled out a thing saying where i wanted my scores sent. So those schools then sent me information about the school after they received my scores, but since your a junior you might not have taken the act yet.
