Political correctness originated with all the right intentions. To demonstrate respect for the dignity of particular groups of people who had traditionally been ignored, ridiculed, marginalized or outright oppressed by mainstream society.
But, like most everything else in our media-saturated culture, it's been taken to a ridiculous extreme. And in doing so has ironically become a tool of oppression and censorship. And an excuse for people to act outraged about something.

"Censorship" of the sort practiced in this venue is unobjectionable. A private company like Yahoo! has no obligation to publish anything (except their financial statements) and if their mechanisms for maintaining certain standards are abused, that's a sad reflection of the participants more than it is "oppressive".

"Political correctness" has always been oppressive. Its origins are in the writings of the Marxist philosopher and social theorist, Marcuse, specially the paper "Repressive Tolerance", which defended the view that "tolerance" - when it involved tolerance of views which further social and political inequality - is actually "repressive", so that progressives should be in the censorship business.

Never heard of him? I bet you've heard of his slogans. His book, "Eros and Civilization" gave us the hippies slogan "Make Love not War!" and claimed that sexual liberation would lead to rejection of militarism and authoritarianism.

He's one of the most influential people you've never heard of.

My view: courtesy is a good thing. Respect for the sensibilities of one's neighbors is what makes civilization possible. But censorship, especially hypocritically selective censorship, is anathema to academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas.

Two ways in which political correctness is used is as a criticism for compassion and as a substitute for compassion. Opposition to the oppression of women is often motivated by compassion, but tends to be characterised as a new kind of oppression in order to justify failure to oppose it by the person using the term. Conversely, simplistic measures are sometimes taken to lull people into a false sense of security and a stick to beat the outsider instead of compassionate and face to face responses to a situation where there is suffering.

I think "political correctness" has become the watchword for the overly sensitive and seriously anal retentive morons!!!!! If you don't believe in Christmas, ignore it! If you are black, be black! We are fueled by the tiny and insignificant labels that can be applied, rather than the substance of the item in question. And the open minded acceptance of our differences.

Being computing device is a decision. the liberty of determination helps a individual to make your recommendations up directly to be computing device or decide directly to no longer be. basically as somebody who swears lots and people who do no longer use swear words. in specific circumstances their determination may well be based off being computing device yet i do no longer see the way it is oppressive. I stay in the south and the be conscious n!gg** is basically yet another be conscious that gets thrown around by a lot of human beings. i do no longer evaluate myself to be very computing device via fact I talk my recommendations freely. in spite of the shown fact that i don't sense the could desire to apply that be conscious. no longer purely via fact different human beings may well be offended by it yet via fact i don't sense the could desire to degrade a definite race. persons are human beings to me and it form of feels extra liberating to me to view them as collectively with a substitute of having a closed minded view on race or somebody's sexual determination. If something in keeping with danger people who're racist are oppressed for the reason that they're so heavily tied to those words that it may effect their existence. collectively with driving a wedge inbetween all people who's of yet another race or a gay. i understand a guy who runs a mechanic shop it is racist and has used racist words while he has misplaced his cool with them and loosing their organization. of direction it is their good to be that way.

Yes. You know it's bad when people create multiple accounts to express how they really feel under a different name.

EDIT: And good morning to you my ET!

Yes, it is. Oppressive to the point of dishonesty.

Absolutely. There is literally nothing you can say that won't offend someone. Therefore, we are left with pablum and no one can express how they feel about anything. It's ridiculous.
