To the victor the spoils !
Wherever there is conflict or a take-over the victor says how its done. Christians took over hundreds of years ago and this is what happened.
So many people now celebrate the non-religious part of Christmas, the gift giving etc. Perhaps this is the Pagan Justice in the end.

According to the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano "the real date of Jesus' birth from the historical viewpoint, lies concealed beneath a veil of uncertainty as regards Roman history, the imperial census of that time & research in the subsequent centuries. The date of 25 December, as is well known, was chosen by the Church of Rome in the fourth century. This date in pagan Rome was dedicated to the Sun god...Although Christianity had already been affirmed in Rome by an Edict of Constantine, the myth of...the Sun god was still widespread, especially among soldiers. The above mentioned festivities, centred on 25 December, were deeply rooted in popular tradition. This gave the Church of Rome the idea of impressing a Christian religious significance on the day by replacing the Sun god with the true Sun of Justice, Jesus Christ, choosing it as the day on which to celebrate his birth."

I think it's because they wanted to have a celebration too and didn't want the pagans having all the fun. I know the documented reason was to convert the pagans but I think they just got tired of not having any fun!

That was way before my time, but the Pagans in converting to Christianity way back when wanted to keep that part of their culture, just in a different way and that idea spread.

Christians wanted to eradicate Paganism, and one of the ways in which they did that was to strategically place their holidays on Pagan holidays. They thought that if Pagans couldn't celebrate their holidays, they'd be easier to convert.
Pretty mean, huh?

if i recall correctly, it was roman emperor constantine that started this "transition". when he converted to christianity, he still wanted to maintain peace in the empire--since christianity was still fairly new by time's standards n most practiced other religions, often based in nature. so constantine took the biggest festival days and gave them a christian "overhaul". hence, winter solstice became the date for christmas (even though, most now are learning that jesus was actually born in april, rather than december); all saints' day--nov. 1st--was added after the harvest celebration of sahwain (sp?)--oct. 31st (which became known as halloween 'coz most christians called oct. 31st "all hallow's eve--n then shortened it); easter came about through the celebration of spring (and it was through the catholics that the day just keeps changing, lol!)--spring was the time of rebirth and newness, so jesus' resurrection fit right in there....
sorry if this got a bit long-winded ;0) simplest answer--it was to slowly convert non-christians, while still allowing them to keep their traditions and keep the peace

We took over the day and changed the meaning of the celebration to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

And Jesus was based off of the egyption god Horus.
1. Horus born of a virgin. <> Jesus born of a virgin.
2. The foster father of Horus was Seb or Seph. <> Jesus was fostered by Joseph.
3. Horus was of royal descent. <> Jesus was of royal descent.
4. Horus birth accompanied by three solar deities [star gazers] who followed by the morning star of Sirius bearing gifts. <> Jesus birth accompanied by three wise men [Zoroastrian star gazers] who followed by a star “in the east” bearing gifts.
5. The birth of Horus announced by angels. <> The birth of Jesus announced by angels.

12. Horus was buried and resurrected in the city of Anu. <> The place Bethany mentioned in John was a derivative of the words “Bet” and “Anu” which translates “the house of Anu”. The ‘y’ on the end of bethany is interchangeable with the letter ‘u’.

14. Horus was accompanied by two thieves at the crucifixtion. <> Jesus was crucified with two thieves.
15. Horus was buried in a tomb at Anu. <> Jesus was buried in a tomb located in Bethany [Bet-Anu].
16. Horus was resurrected after 3 days. <> Jesus was “said” to resurrected after over a period of three days.
17. The resurrection of Horus was announced by three women. <> The resurrection of Jesus was announced by three women.
18. Horus was given the titel KRST which means “anointed one” <> Jesus was given the title Christ [Christos] meaning “anointed one”
