Some of the older ATA controllers had 137GB limits, and I suspect this is what is happening here. You can buy a newer controller card which supports 48-bit addressing and use it with your drive.

Check the hard drive itself. See if there's written 500Gb it. If it's the case, then
Maybe some part of it got corrupted or crashed
Did you install any version of linux before? Try installing any of the latest versions of Linux, you can download it freely and legally. Maybe Linux's file allocation table may find your lost disk space.

even if u installed Vista it still should not have used that much space. sounds like something more got added then should have been. u may have to clear the drive and install again.

U need to PARTITION the rest of the drive.
Only FAT32X or NTFS can be a single 500G partition
So you either need to use one of these, or use "local disk management" to create 2 more partitions on the drive
Right click MY COMPUTER, select MANAGE, find local disk management, locate the disc. and create new partitions, right click / partition off memory

You probably have security software, which doesn't show up as used space. You should uninstall it immediately, and check out the porn sites.
