But seriously I find that when I am in that situation I just say something like, "don't be scared i wont bite, I just leave claw marks"

Awkward silences can be best managed beforehand. Taking an interest in the person you're conversing with will open up the possibilities of questions you can ask or observations you can make that would be of interest to the other party.

one way to break and awkward silence is by changing the subject. when yo suspect the people in the conversation don't have anything to say about the subject, change it immediately. for example christmas is coming soon, say there was an awkward silence, jump in with "so.... what are you doing for christmas" or "what do you want for christmas?"

Make a simple joke reflecting the moment. In an elevator for example, turn to someone and say, boy at least in the stairway we can read the graffiti.

I got creative, and it breaks itself. As long as I don't go to a market, I take my miniature 4 pound white Chihuahua with me. Even going to stand in line at the bank. She's a real attention getter. She's REALLY small. 2 years, and full grown.
