I am using an old usb (MODEM BT voyager 50) If I changed this to a more recent model could this up my connection speed (288/576). Also is there anything that I can do with my PC to assist the project. BT say that the line is OK for 2Mbits

Yeah the modem might have an effect, but also take a look at the CPU level while doing things on the internet, an intensive firewall rule set would consume much CPU time and perhaps limit throughput slightly.

Also note that not all internet sites can carry a lot of traffic.

I don't know the VOYAGER 50, but certainly modems had maximum speeds, which could only be increased by getting a new modem.

If your line is good fro 2Mbits, what rate are you paying for?.

Modems detect actual maximum stable connection speeds, up to the capacity of the modem, and use that.

If you are using a USB modem then it would be a good move to get a modem with ethernet connection assuming you have an ethernet card on your pc.

USB uses cpu resources whereas ethernet does not.

An USB ADSL modem router can only upload at 288kbps and download at 576kbps, your best bet is to buy an ADSL modem router, which can be purchased nicely from your local PCWorld store, you can even reserve and pick up to make sure its avaliable at your local store, i will provide links to the best product for your needs
