A piece of pipe, a pickaxe handle...just something tucked away in case of an emergency?

Of course I am talking here from the UK where guns aren't an option, and I mean from a safety rather than legal angle...but is it adviseable?

I have a metal bar by my front door.
A metal bar by my living room seat.
An eighteen year old birch branch (we used to sword fight in our little club when I was 13) by my bedside.
And a baseball bat also in my bedroom.

I don't think I would ever use them as I'm not a violent person but they are there just in case my life depended on it. Even with that the case of that farmer Chris Martin I think his name was was arrested for defending his property.

Am from the UK too.

It is not so advisable to keep 'obvious' weapons around like guns or an axe. Golf clubs or baseball bats are much better.

Well, don't most ppl have something in their homes already that they can use as a weapon? The kitchen is a dangerous place. You can always pull the towel bar off the wall, a telephone is heavy enough to make a dent and electrical cords can come in handy too.

Have I thought about this a bit too much?

i would prefer to have some type of weapon in the home...stashed in various parts of the home. Bathroom, bedroom, kitchen etc. There are alot of home invasions that go on..look at sean taylor, the safety for the redskins..look at that elderly asian couple in california..all these people may be still alive today if a gun was conveniently accessible to them when someone kicked the door in. Not only for home invasions..someone breaking into your home, to steal your things..who's to say this person is just a thief? What if their intent is to do something to your child or wife..anyway..

I caught my neighbour robbing my house some tine ago and I gave him a hiding to remember. Would you believe that he ran back to his own house and called the cops to save himself!!! i gave him a smack of a bottle across the head, he was a really big, big guy but that was my instant reaction.
Since then I always have a weapon by my bed but not a bottle just an old wooden handle from a shovel.
Protect your family, friends, yourself and your property because the law will let you down.

If you are expecting a home invasion in the near future, and your government has banned guns then your best bet is to either set up a secret escape route or a secret safe room where you can either get out or wait out. You should keep a supply of water and communication devices on hand in the safe room.

I alarm our home up every night, we also have a club each side of the bed, & a panic botton for good measure, and we live in a quiet Village, but I don't take any chances.

Legally you can keep just about anything in your house. But if the thing can be used as a weapon be very careful, you can only use reasonable force (Bop them) when they are entering the house. If you bop them on their way out you could be done for assault.
