Piers Anthony.

Initially, it was his Xanth series, which is funny, filled with puns, and is a great set of stories. You don't need the other books to understand a current one, but previous books can enhance later ones.

Then, I've read his Mode series, as well as Incarnations of Immortality. At the end of each book, he has an Author's Note, in where he gives very insightful stories of his life, and how he has tried to help fans who've told him problems, ranging from suicide attempts to the story of a young woman, Jenny, who was paralyzed by a drunk driver. It's nice to have an author who really cares about his fans!

I don't really have favorite authors. I have favorite books, because I often don't like all of the books by one author (or most of them), or I'm afraid to try more in case I don't like them, and it ruins the other books for me. I don't know. I have these strange rules that make sense to only me. Everyone else thinks I'm crazy, but I don't blame them. I sort of agree.

I do like Stephenie Meyer, though. Her best selling series originated from a curious dream she had that she wrote down. The rest of the book (Twilight) was written out of order and the dream she had became my favorite part in the book. Anyways, I admire her because of her writing style, that dream that made her and her series so famous, and the fact that she hadn't been writing a lot before she wrote it. I think it's amazing. But that's just me.

I also like Chris Wooding, because of his outrageously cool books (of which I've only read three: Poison, Storm Thief, and I'm currently working on The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray but I'm loving it so far) that have original plots. And his writing style.

Sorry for the really crappy answer.

My favourite author is Pauline Gedge. She writes mainly historical fiction about ancient Egypt. I first started reading her books about twenty years ago with 'The Eagle and the Raven' which was set in Celtic Britain during the time of the Roman invasion. After that I discovered 'Child of the Morning' about Queen Hapshetsut and 'The Twelfth Transforming' about Akenaten. I have read all of the Egypt novels and enjoyed them tremendously.

Mark Twain.
Because he's so darn witty.
Nothing escaped his incisive eye.
But he shares the mantle with many others like Jane Austen, Terry Pratchett, Harper Lee, Carlos Fuentes, the Brönte sisters, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Renault, Tom Wolfe, etc.
So many!

Well, it truly depends on what genre you are specifically talking about.
Romance- Rachel Hawthorne. I like how she mixes in certain topics with everyday things all people deal with at the age of a teenager.
Horror- Stephen King and R.L. Stine. I like how they mix many elements together to create the ultimate horror story to keep you up late into the night.
Mystery- Agatha Christie. Her books are mysterious with unexplained murders that keep you on your toes. Also Alex Duval.

Jack London; in 6th grade I started reading his books, especially "White Fang" and "Sea Wolf". His books basically introduced me to the world of classic literature. I love how he managed to work so much complex symbolism into what were otherwise simple plots...also I love how he wrote about the hardships of the poor people ("The People of the Abyss")

Mark Prophet, as he gives plausible insights on a goodly number of topics. "Climb the Highest Mountain" is a general, undergraduate-level introduction to his work.
