It can be. I get concerned about people who say they cherish all our rights and freedoms as a people but are the first to want to or actually do curtail those rights and freedom all in the name of security and best interests of the country. The question is in who's best interest and who's security. Its why I am so troubled by the Patriot Act and the use of that word to curtail rights and freedoms that the founding fathers fought so hard to achieve. Naming something with the word Patriot doesn't mean it is.

It is funny how right wing extremists call themselves patriotic and how left wing extremists call themselves patriotic and how each one's opposite are traitors. Actually I believe there are very, very few traitors in the US. Those calling the other side traitors are over emoting and probably extremists. Extremism whether right or left is dangerous.

I'd be more concerned about those who would make being a Patriot into a traitorous activity

Those attack patriotism is the refuge for traitors.
Those who smear the troops, call generals lairs, etc etc.
A patriot cares about this country and trys to do the right thing and help build it up not tear it down if it doesn't go their way.

The original statement, by Samuel Johnson, was "last refuge of a scoundrel."
Incidentally, my online source suggests that Johnson may have intended this remark to be directed toward Edmund Burke, one of the original creators of the political philosophy which forms the underlying foundation of traditional American conservatism.
