Point the hour hand at the sun. Half way between the hour hand and 12 is due south to +/- 3 degrees. Remember to allow for any Daylight Saving Time that may be in operation when you do this. The error is due to the what is known as the equation of time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equation_of_time) which means that the 'sun-time' varies throughout the year from 'clock-time', but it's close enough.

Not a watch answer, but to know where east is, this is where the sun rises, the opposite sense . is west of course. If you are standing such that east is to your right and west id to your left, then north is in front of you and south is behind you.
