Salt is an oxidizing agent that reacts with metals. It eats away paint and causes metals to rust. While salt does a good job melting ice and snow, it can have disastrous effect on your car's paint and metal. Be sure you keep the road SALT washed off the car. Also, if you're purchasing a used cars, know it's history as to where it's from... Areas with a lot of snow and ice; or from the beach (sea salt in the air.)

Anything that can build up inside the wheel wells and frame of a car will hold salt and moisture up against the metal, which can eventually allow rust to form.
The best practice is to find a car wash that can spray your car's undercarriage as you move through, and wash out the offending grit and salt. Washing your car in one of these facilities every couple of weeks will definitely help keep your car in good condition.

Uh... yeah big time. Come to Buffalo NY. We have cars with completely no floor left after 15 years.
In the winter I drive a 93 Accord that I bought for $100.
My rust free cars are stored indoors.
There is no other defense other than to have your car repainted every 2 years. Any bare metal will have a hole in no time.

Yes road salt will rust your car metal.
Just make sure that if you wash off the salt, it is really washed off (not just wet it with a hose). Just wetting it will only make the salt more active again.
Good Luck

Yes it will, anything added to the roads to stop ice and snow is going to in one way or another cause rust or at least accelerate it.
