I want to do this so I can connect to my routers page via my browser so I may configure it. (My current default gateway doesn't work because my ip is from Roadrunner, not my router.)

connect your ethernet cable to one of the ports on back of the router, just make sure your tcp/ip adapter is set for DHCP, and it will pull an ip address from the router.
Go to START, then RUN,type in CMD..hit enter.
then type IPCONFIG... you should be able to view the ip address that you got from your router.
If that looks correct, then open your browser and at the address bar, type in the address of the router that you need to configure...such as (192.168.1.1) or whatever your router uses.
This will connect you to the admin portion of the router..Most Linksys routers use ...login is admin and the password is admin.. good luck.

If the router is connected to the modem on the wan port and the PC is connected to the local port on the router then do an IPCONFIG /renew and it should pick up the ip address from the routers DHCP. This should be enabled in the default configuration. Most NAT DSL/Cable Modem routers come default to pick up an DHCP served external IP and serve out private IP range addresses to the lan.

Take an Ethernet cable, plug it into an ethernet port on the modem, and plug the other side of the cable into the WAN port of the router (it may say "modem" or "internet).

Some modems out there are built as "smart modems". This means that (in addition) to being a modem, they may be providing some limited routing functionality. If this is the case, you may need to configure the modem to be in "bridge mode", thus turning off the 'routing' in the modem, and making it truly just a modem.

I would suggest going to the modem's manufacturer's website or calling their support line to see if the modem needs to be configured for 'bridge mode'.

You need to set your router to DHCP. I'm sure this answer is in your documentation which you should follow to properly install the router. If not, then call the router's tech support. They are usually pretty good and even have shortcuts.
