brake fluid... i wouldn't try anything else it is made to have the right density, not corrode, and it is the right thing others might ruin your system and you will have to buy a lot more than a less than 5$ bottle of brake fluid

The only time you should ever pour anything other than brake fluid into there is if you have an emergency and have to get the car home - and if that happens, be sure to have the fluid replaced as soon as possible. I've seen transmission fluid put in the brake system and the results aren't pretty.

NONE!!!!!!! mixing brake fluid with other fluids can and will cause fires and possibly explosions !!!! Brake fluid is the ONLY fluid you put into a brake system , any other fluid can cause a fire when mixed with brake fluid its recommended that you remove old brake fluid before you replace it .. ( no I'm not kidding) brake fluid is designed to be used with a brake system or a hydraulic clutch system . make sure to get the proper brake fluid for your car/truck there are 3 different types . type 3 , which is is for the older drum brake system type 4 which is for the "newer" disc brake system and type 5 which is a silicone based fluid for special applications like racing . I cannot stress enough to NEVER mix brake fluid with any other fluids ..

None!
I should mention I'm an automotive technician, and I know this stuff.
All those idiots who said transmission fluid will be replacing all the rubber parts in their brake systems because they'll swell up to twice their original size and render the brake system useless.
I have seen the results of stupidity first hand.

NOTHING. Brake fluid is customized to withstand the temperature and not chemically ruin the seals of the brakes.
That is a dangerous place to mess around. If you put in the wrong fluid you could end up dead when your car can't stop.

I've heard of people using ATF in a pinch, but only for a dire emergency. All it would be is something to stretch the brake fluid you have out a little thinner with something that won't kill your car's system (like water). But, I would recommend it on about the same level as pissing in your radiator when you're coolant is low....only a last resort.

if its an emergency hydraulic fluid will work.a brake system is a hydraulic system just as a automatic transmission is a hydraulic system. the difference in the fluids will be additives to keep seals tight in respected systems; different systems have different seals and require different fluids, but its all just the application of pressure thru hydraulic fluid.
P.S. transmission fluid is hydraulic fluid

You can add some transmission fluid but only temporary. It's the closest to brake fluid as you can get. But I would prefer that you would go to the store and purchase more brake fluid. If money is tight go to the Dollar store there one everywhere. :) Good luck!
