Philosophy is the precursor to science. Without asking the question it becomes impossible to seek the answer. If no one ever asked "What is the smallest thing?" we wouldn't have quantum physics and particle accelerators. If we never wondered about the heavens we would still believe the earth was the center of a very small universe. All science is based on philosophical pondering. It is a testament to mans creative genius in formulating the most stimulating of philosophical questions that we live in an age of such stunning scientific achievement

No. Flat out . As science advances , the need for philosophy increases. Philosophy gives us perspective on the advances of science.
The difference between science and philosophy is .... Science is a theory determined through testing and trial and error , whereas philosophy is more like a feeling about a scientific discovery.
Example. The science behind an organic based fuel like ethanol is completely different than the philosophy that using cleaner fuels will better our environment.
Usually , it takes a philosophy , or a state of mind before you can use science to invoke it.

science is what the establishment wants us 2 believe whether or not it's true. i do believe in some science though. anytime we say science is right and philosophy is wrong without even making an analysis the establishment wins. philosophy is what people make in their spare time. opinions and ideas. art and philosophy are a kind of similarity they are important to society but are not considered important 2 the establishment. so basically science is researched philosophy that is not rejected while philosophy is the opposite.

Hello:

Science is the way that we understand the world. It forms the rules that we best think the world operates under and is by its definition always open to revision.

Philosophy (literally) means to love wisdom. Science can tell us how the world works, but without philosophy we will be hard pressed to say what it actually means.

I would say that the more that we know (the farther we progress in sciences) the MORE we will need philosophy in order to help us find our place in the world.

I hope this helps.

Good question.

I think philosophy is still necessary for keeping the big picture and for inquiry into areas where science cannot advance. Philosophy will continue to be dependent on scientific evidence to support or deny truth claims, and science will continue to be dependent on philosophers to tread new paths of inquiry.

Actually, I would say that as science advances, the need for philosophy increases, even tough man generally seems to think otherwise.

Science it a way to understand the world based on predictions. It is closely tied to technology, the means to control the world in which we live. Philosophy, it is often forgotten, is the love of wisdom. It is not a particular knowledge or method of inquiry, but a will to act and live in accordance to a certain ethos, which seeks what is good.
So as science increases, so does man's power to affect his world. But this power does not presuppose any wisdom in and of itself. So I would say that as our power increases, so does our responsibility to use it wisely.

Science answers the question how things work. Philosophy answers why things are as they are.

Philosophy is science itself, a science of life in general. It is the fact, though, that the meaning of the deep sea disappears in shallow waters.
