Sounds like everyone is on the right track. If you bleed your brakes - you MUST make sure you don't suck air into the master cylinder. If you don't keep the fluid topped off at ALL times, you could be putting air back into the system.
Another possibility is vapor lock. That means the brakes heat up and cause the fluid to boil. The boiled fluid turns to gas and acts like air in the line.
To say the least, you need to fix the brakes. RE-BLEED THEM BEING CAREFUL NOT TO SUCK AIR IN THE MASTER CYLINDER.

I can tell you for certain that it's not. A failed brake booster will make the pedal way too stiff but will not produce the symptoms you describe. What you are describing sounds like a problem with the master cylinder or that the brake bleeding went wrong and you have air in the lines.

when you bleed brakes you need to bleed all 4 wheels because when you remove the caliper you introduced air into the whole system .. rebleed the brakes all 4 of them .. you will probably have to do this both with the engine off and with the engine running if you have anti lock brakes

It's possible that the fluid has absorbed water(condenstaion) and the water boils, causing air bubbles. Bleed it all out from RR then LR, then RF then LF. Make sure the master is always full, and that all the fluid is new.

sounds like you still have air in the lines, when a booster goes bad, the brake pedal is hard to push.

It's called a BRAKE booster, and it might be bad but it isn't why you have a low pedal. Perhaps you have a fluid leak.
