Many things can help increase computer speed. And it also depends on what type of applications you are running which methods would best increase the speed.

You can do some analysis of your system and see where a bottleneck may be.

If you are low on RAM, adding more could improve the speed. This is especially true if you are running programmes which load a massive amount into memory to run --- such as video editing programmes.

Naturally, upgrading your processor will increase speed.

If your hard disc is heavily fragmented, defragging it can help as well. And this will cost you nothing except time.

If you have a video card that utilises the system memory (or are using the motherboard video), you may want to upgrade to a video card that has substantial onboard memory. This will help with graphic intensive programmes such as games.

For software solutions, you can clean up your operating environment by stopping various background programmes. By running only one application at a time this will allow all the system resources to be available for that one task.

Try a good workout 5 days a week. Make sure to get it on the treadmill or elliptical.

(More RAM, less crap running, some software works, but it's all based around your HARDWARE).
