(x+2)^2=12
x+2=(12)^1/2
x+2=(4*3)^1/2
x+2=2(3)^1/2
x=2(3)^1/2-2
x=2(1.7302)-2
x=3.4641-2=1.4641 approx.
Factoring the 12 important. You need a calculator to find value for sqrt(3). Luck

(x+2)^2=12
x+2= +/- 12^1/2 (^1/2 = sqaure root)
x= -2 +/- 12^1/2
That's as far as you can simplify it unless your teacher let's you use a calculator to find square roots:
x= -2 +/- 3.464
x= 1.464 x= -5.464

I don't see why we cannot take the square root of both sides!
X + 2 = 3.464101615 therefore Check:
X = 3.464101615 - 2 then (3.46)^2 = 11.97160
11.97 = 12 approx.
X = 1.464101615

(x+2)^2 = 12
(x+2)^2 = [2sqrt(3)]^2
x+2 = +/- 2sqrt(3)
x = -2 + 2sqrt(3) or - 2 - 2sqrt(3)
x = 2(-1 + sqrt(3)) or - 2(1 + sqrt(3))
