In a nutshell, it was about getting out of the old Tsarist "regime" and into a new kind of government. It brought forth the USSR, Russian Communism, Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.
EDIT: I didn't read the question first...it took place in 1917, near the end of the first World War.

1917 tho the "russian revolution" was a series of revolts and uprising running from early 1917 thru the novemeber "boleshevic revolution" ..March saw the petrograd soviet wrest power and force the abdication of czar nicholas, putting a provisional goverment of old aristocrats and others in power ,guys like kerensky, lvov and the various cadet elements under kornilov, in july there were massive workers party uprisings mostly pushed by the bolshevics,in around august kornilov had split withthe others and his cadet elements led a march/uprising that stopped short of overthrowing the provisionals..and finally in november lenin and his bolshevics over thru the provisional goverment..tho that didnt end it completely the pro-czarist cossacks (the white russians) continued to revolt/resist the bolshevics for sometime, eventually leading to the decision to execute the czar and his family when it looked like the region they were held in would fall to the white russians,at least that made a good excuse for lenin to have them murdered.

which one? there was one in march 1917 which overthrew the tsar. and then there was a provisional govt for 9 months who promised an election but never got round to it. then lenin came along in october/november ( they have a different calender or something?) but i think its november and he overthrew them and also promised an elevtion but then when he realised it wouldnt win he called it off.
