I asked a question about "The Death Of rock Music" yesterday and I recieved replies ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime to the downright insulting
So today I have a challenge for you. I have heard sooo many times over how there are so many great post 1995 bands out there that I'm missing that are not repetitive and who are, in point of fact great
So, as the man said..Link Me
Bring Me Your great rock bands and Prog bands and Metal bands from 1995-2007
Rock's not dead?....Prove Me Wrong
I promise I'll watch every clip. I got nothing much better to do on a rainy Sunday
If they are great...by gum I will admit it and if I don't like it...you'll hear about that too
So hit me up...I want to see what you've got, or as they say in the wrestling section...Just Bring It

Airbourne. Stripped down hard rock. Their gods are AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and other australian rock bands.

Stand Up For Rock 'n' Roll: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nx4ppBnvLmY

Blackjack: http://youtube.com/watch?v=lySTeUlyNeY

Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CgAgG68TRKE

Diamond in the Rough: http://youtube.com/watch?v=zC1viguDcN0

EDIT: They do rock, right? The CD doesn't come out in the US till next month. Luckily a local mom and pop store had an advancd US copy for $8. Guess who scored? If you want you can get an import off of fye.com for like $30. Anyways, good that I'm spreading the word for these guys.

Okay, I answered the other question, so I'll just add a couple more bands here since it's 1995 and after.

Muse and White Stripes I already explained.

Tool. They're like progressive/alternative metal. It's hard to explain. More like alternative metal than anything, but they got some prog influences. No keyboardists though. Tool has some great people. Singer, lyricist, guitarist, drummer, and bassist. You want a vocal performance? Check out "Pushit". Maybe a guitar riff? "Stinkfist". Drumming? "Ticks and Leeches". A bassline? "Schism".

Rage Against the Machine. I hope rap is okay for you. They're rap metal. I think you've listened to them before, but if you haven't, they're really a great band. Awesome riffs, unique solos, funky basslines, political lyrics, great rhythm section, etc. Try some of these songs: "Wake Up", "Bulls on Parade", "Bullet in Your Head", "Sleep Now in the Fire", "Killing in the Name", "Take the Power Back".

The Strokes. These guys are great. While they aren't underrated as a band, some of the members are underrated in the instruments they play. I'll be honest and say I've only listened to one album, but it was great. Listen to their entire debut; it's garage rock greatness.

Just a couple.

Darth - I think on an earlier question, I mentioned my ignorance of Rock, after 1994
- I do think Rock has somewhat "died" with the advent of Rap/Hip-Hop, becoming the top popular music since 95.
- However, I do believe that Metal will always be Fresh, because, historically, it has survived all Phases of various Rock/Pop formats . What I want to learn now is NOT more of the same Rock bands, but those that represent NEW IDEAS. So far (and again, forgive my ignorance) I see this in bands like -- Current 93, Tool, Radiohead, and Beck (I know they go back to the 90s, but...)
- My niece tells me all of these new "branches" like EMO, SCREMO, etc., and I have no freaking clue how to identify what is what; and what is actually GOOD?!?!
- I just want to hear new ideas like NIN, Butthole Surfers, and Rob Zombie brought to the 90s.
- This doesn't answer your question, Darth, but --
-- I would love it if SOMEONE OUT THERE WOULD TURN-ME ON TO NEW, CUTTING-EDGE MUSIC.

Thanks!!

P.S. On an unrelated note - I think Stabbing Westward (whille not completely original) is the most underated band of the 90s.

Not to be contrary, but I think it's a little bit myopic to make blanket statements like "rock is dead". Your main justification for saying this seems to be that there aren't any really good prog and metal bands, but the fact is that prog has never exactly been in vogue anyway so the likelihood of there being reams of prog bands around that end up getting record deals is pretty slim, but more importantly, rock, and music in general is dynamic and so is constantly changing. You probably listen to bands like Rush and Yes, but would you genuinely want every band out there to sound like carbon copies of them. So perhaps the fact that you can't find any good modern prog and metal bands is due to the fact that the limits of those genres have, for the most part been fully explored, and so what you end up with is derivative and inferior in comparison with the seminal bands associated with those genres.

Of course, if you personally don't appreciate today's rock music, that's perfectly fair, after all there's no accounting for taste, but to say that for that reason alone rock must be dead isn't fair to newer bands who continue to made original, innovative music.

Sorry for ranting, and again I'm not trying to be confrontational or anything. Here are my links, though chances are you won't like them.

'kay.
Not many people seem to like the music that I enjoy, so I'll probably be branded as 'the one with bad taste'.
But bleh - here are a few anyway [they don't seem to be particularly well known - I'm not sure if you wanted more popular bands];

Many of these are quite mellow.. hmm.

The Secret Machines;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MMK6rKt2NYA

Katastrophy Wife;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GiiSX0puafo

Gravenhurst;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AUPqwWG8Zes

The Morning After Girls;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7oqrq_2KNi8

Exit Ten;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VKbdTrWWr6k

I think that might be enough? I'm probably off the mark with all of them...
There's some Gothic Rock that I wanted to include but I tried to keep it somewhat Darth friendly.

edit; sorry I have to.

Viking Skull;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wCwMy9d-XR0

edit, Fonzie T; You're the first Secret Machines fan i've come across. Fabulous. I've been into them for about 6 months.
I know, Darth will probably hate them but it never hurts to try.
I realised that for most of my R&P experience I've been babbling on about GNR and I haven't been giving credit to all the smaller bands that really deserve some attention.

Ok, I talk too much, ha.

edit; That's great I'm glad you like [some of] them.
A new Secret Machines fan, that's wonderful - it does make me happier, I cracked a smile.

Hey, it's raining here too! :0 )

*stares about helplessly* After 1995? Maybe I DON'T listen to so much modern rock.... Most of the modern stuff I do listen to is indie, so if you want some really upbeat/pretty mellow stuff, I got some:

Beulah- Landslide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8S3k2TWaJo

The Shins: So Says I (watch the music video, I love it!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-P15e6NvtU

and this is Riverside, a modern prog band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uItqFhe56Rw

Wow.... I'm really drawing a blank....

you might be right that rock is dead but hey you have to move with the times. maybe rock is not in right now, all you hear in the radio right now is hip hop or pop music..maybe the new generation dont care for the rock bands at the present moment.. if they did there would be tons of awesome rock bands out there like in the 70's,80's, 90's...but its just not the time right now. i say the same thing about love music..what happend to those great love songs from the 50's-80's..it just died..i dont think the new generation care for love balllads..maybe some do but the majority does not.

I'm afraid they might not be heavy enough for you Darth, but The Strokes are a GREATT band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vKoIw_THvQ&feature=related

There's a band called Priestess that got almost zero publicity before GH came out, and some of their songs are a bit pop-rock-ish... but I enjoy them quite a lot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTieMnn3728

Arctic Monkeys haven't done anything groundbreaking yet, but they've got some MAJOR potential.. I'm quickly becoming a big fan. /Somewhat/ ditto to Weezer.
A.M.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30w8DyEJ__0

Foo Fighters are *awesome.* Grohl is sill kicking major behind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juCQ1BteSW4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BieVgyrfglQ

I'm also taking a liking to the White Stripes, and a sort of out there band called Mute Math.
W.S.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tc1fHRKTS8
M.M.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1pFZDflEgM

Edit: Dan C beat me to The Strokes and Arctic Monekys.
Still though, at least someone else appreciates them.
& I guess it's fair since I beat him to The Ramones on the Q about obviously profound song titles lol.

Kudos to whoever mentioned Hurt.. I love their song 'Overdose.'

Stephen h also got Weezer, Arctic Monkeys, & The Strokes!
I feel so unoriginal. >.<

Edit2: Darth, I'm glad you liked Priestess!

Hey Darth! I was hoping you'd do this! :)

You need a dose of Wolfmother, Black Stone Cherry & Tool.

Audioslave is good too & I think the Foo Fighters are classic rockers at heart.
