ive ehard this before =] but i guess it depend on the type of hoover.
I recon older hoovers this may of happened once of twice, or maybe a freak accident, like the motor jammed and caught on fire because there was a needle stuck in it somehow,

pretty unlikely. pine needles are no more flammable than carpet lint, that's for sure.
