All else being equal, Christmas is just a much bigger deal than it used to be. People "celebrate" it for almost two months of the year when it used to be a day.

How can anyone claim that American culture really celebrates Christmas as a Christian holiday?

Your attitude really makes me mad! You're part of the problem! Certainly not part of the solution.

Why do you suppose you see 2 months worth of Christmas commercialization? Think hard for a minute. I know that it probably hurts to do that.

The reason corporate America pounds you for two months is because there IS such a thing as a Christian Christmas holiday. If Christians didn't celebrate Christmas, do you THINK corporate America would have a marketing opportunity?

See... you're just seeing what you're wanting to see. You see only what your senses allow you to see. You don't see what's going on in the hearts of men and women who love the Lord and the birth of the Savior. If all you want to observe is the madness and the profiteering that takes place, you go right ahead... that's probably all you're capable of seeing anyway. Got your blinders on yet? Good little robot!

I would say that very few American families celebrate Christmas entirely as a Christian celebration of the birth of Christ while completely rejecting the commercialism that has grown at Christmas time since the mid 1800's.

There was a girl here on answers last week that was lamenting the fact that she only had 60 presents under the thee, so far....

Christmas is a time of celebration. For many, it is a time to celebrate their faith. For others, it is a time to celebrate friends and family. For others still it is a time to simply enjoy the colder weather, holiday decorations and the "feel" of the season.

Everything is marketing these days; holidays, people, places, things, etc. Yes, it's commercialized, and yes, perhaps that takes away from the "true" spirit, but lighten up, have fun, and enjoy it!

In all honesty, people being afraid to say "Merry Christmas" or (worse) saying things like "Happy Winter Festival" is far more offensive to me than the commercialization of the holiday. Political Correctness needs to die a speedy death.

It really depends on the family. Mine just doesn't have the cash to compete with all that. Which actually worked out really well. We all do 'secret Santa' now and draw names for presents and don't go into debt during the holidays anymore.

But yes some are in full denail it is happening, but it has been happening for some 50 years now. As for the Christian ties, it is actually very sinful to be so commercial and I don't agree with that aspect of it at all. But yes, greed, envy, coveting, commercialism, gluttony, the list goes on and on. All very bad and mortal sins, totally unforgivable by God according to scripture.

i think you should accept the fact that people all have different perceptions of christmas, if that is your opinion it's fine, but you need to know that the true purpose of christmas is to celebrate the birth of jesus christ.
Many people now a days just take it as a holiday to get a lot of presents, and that seems to over rule the true meaning.

well you truely offended me because i am Catholic and Christians celebrate Christmas because it is the birth of Christ. My family is a typical American family we celebrate Christmas with presents but some people who are not Christian also celebrate it.

i LOVE christmas. its just a day that replaced a day in the pagan
calander so when the catholics took over they wouldn't revolt. Jesus wasn't even born in the winter. just clarifying.
some people get wrapped up in just buying and buying, but i can vouch that not everyone does this. i still go to church christmas eve and christmas. of course, companys are gonna use christmas as a way to make customers buy stuff. its just a given

I agree with you. I think Christmas is to commercialized. I think alot of people don't want to be reminded of it because this time of year makes them feel a little special. As if everything in the wolrd feels a little bit more right in December.

I know I'm the only one out of my group of friends that goes to church at Christmas time.
I'm not really religious but I do believe the whole Jesus thing.
People seem to forget what christmas is all about!
