My husband and I just bought our house and we CANNOT afford gas heat. We'd much rather have electric heat, but we really dont know how much it would cost or how to go about getting it done. If any one would reply to this we'd REALLY appreciate it.

If you can't afford gas, how will you afford electric? Oil is the least expensive heat, then gas, than electric. Here in Ct. electric heat costs more than twice as much as oil. Measure BTU's per gallon for oil and gas. Never before heard of any one moving to electric for economy.

You didn't mention the age of your home, which would have made a big difference in the answers you receive.

Regardless, you would be much better off using the money to ensure that your presumed gas boiler is under ten years of age, in good working order, and well insulated (even for brand new homes, you can buy overwraps for it and the pipes), and make sure that your home is well insulated both inside and out (i.e., caulk windows, put plastic wrap over the inside of larger windows, put towels or similar under large gaps between closed doors and the floor, etc), and keep the thermostat to the proper temperatures depening on the hour (e.g., while everyone's at work and school, turn it down to 62 degrees or so; and turn off the fan, assuming you have a separate switch for it; when you come home, turn it up to 70 (wearing sweaters and bathrobes is a great way to save money!); when you go to bed, lower it to 68 or so. Of course, if you have a baby or elderly guests, then you may need to adjust the above, accordingly (extra blankets all around!).
