Probably because those 20% of people who can't locate it are illegal immigrants.
Odds are, they probably don't know anything about the U.S, so they wouldn't even know where it would be located on a map to start with....

I don't believe that. What's your source? The only way for their to be that many Americans who can't identify their own country is if they were blind or under the age of 4. And even that if if-fy because my three year old daughter can point out the U.S.

Gee, could it have something to do with our educational system? Could it be broken? Could No Child Left Behind not work?

We spend all this time with hand wringing about religion in schools, corporal punishment, sex education, teachers being out of line, etc, but I never hear anyone screaming about Geography, History, English, Math. Is it any surprise that our students don't know where the US is on a map?

Because 20% of world maps don't HAVE the U.S. on them.

...LoL, just kidding! The correct answer is:

Because whoever conducted the survey, from where you got your information, is an idiot, who doesn't know what they're talking about. Your statistic is false.

I don't know! That's even harder to answer than "where is it?"

Kidding. I think the number is so high because the geographical location of the U.S. is irrelevant to every day experience, and some people are indifferent / not at all curious.

"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and I believe that they should, our education over here in the US should help the US, er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children."
