I have a novel finished and have yet to begin the search for agents /publishers, should I send off a copy to this contest:
http://www.writersdigest.com/contests/annual/77th/
while I continue my search?

Although the contest is reputable, if your novel is good enough to win real contests, it's good enough to sell.

I note that there is no category for novels in this contest, making your entry fee the equivalent of flushed down the toilet. A novel does not meet the specifications and becomes an automatic loser.

Instead, put your energy into researching agents and publishers which fit what you've written and are legitimate.

I would not send your novel to their contest. They might have something in the fine print that would limit how much you can market your novel after the contest is over. They might also have it in the fine print where they assume some control over your novel as well. I don't know exactly what the fine print says, but I would say you would have greater control and make more money if you take the long way and go to literary agents and publishers and get it published.

Writer's Digest is a reputable publication. Enter by all means, but be aware that you will be competing in talented company.

Yeah try everything and keep your heart at your work. Youll never know...it might be that break youve been asking or just one of those lucky streaks...a blessing in disguise!
