I remember watching the very first episode of Capt. Kangaroo broadcasted...he had dark hair and a walrus -like moustache!

I used to love watching all the goings on in the Treasure House....Grandfather Clock, Mr. Green-Jeans, The Banana Man,Mr. Moose...Bunny Rabbit dropping ping-pong balls.....the story Capt. Kangaroo read, and that crazy English Sheep dog (wish I could remember his name) that would periodically charge thru the set...hahahahahaha...

Boy, am I dating myself.
Then there was Kookla, Fran, and Ollie, The Shari Lewis Show, The Sandy Becker Show-think it was called Wonderama, Mr. Wizard, The Hoody-Doody Show, The Andy Devine Show with Froggy, The Mickey Mouse Club.

On Sat Mornings there was Sky King, The Lone Ranger, Fury, My Friend Flicka, Rin Tin-Tin....

Sun nights it was in order Mr. Ed...Lassie...My Favorite Martian....The Ed Sullivan Show...Bonanza/Gun Smoke

We also watched Chiller Theater..The Bullwinkle & Rocky Show...Tarzan....Bugs Bunny...The Three Stooges...and my fav, old Marx Bros. movies...hahahahahahaha what fun those shows were......

Captain Kangaroo Theme

Anyone over 50 would remember Captain Kangaroo. I never heard of Captain Penny, but in the Washington DC area, we had Captain Tugg with the Popeye cartoons.

Addl.: Nonie Mouse and Oklatom, you two sure take me back. I thought I was the only person to remember Beenie & Cecil and Wonderama! Romper Room, who can forget when Miss Ann left the show. And I was so disappointed because no one ever saw me in the magic glass. I still have the letter that we kids all got together and wrote. Rin Tin Tin, Fury, Cheyenne, Robin Hood with Richard Greene, they were all great shows. You people take me back quite a few years!

Captain Kangaroo for sure -- your Captain Penny sounds similar to Captain Muddy Waters (local out of Bay City/Saginaw MI).

Of course, along with Engineer Bill, Two Ton Baker, the Music Maker, Beany and Cecil, Kukla Fran and Ollie, and a ton of others. Did you know the good Captain was also Clarabelle on Howdy Doody?

But I still think radio had a better picture. *grin*

Added: an aside to Franklin, who asks about the theme song for the good captain..for which time period? There were several.

The original theme song to Captain Kangaroo (titled Puffin' Billy) was used from 1955-1974. It was an instrumental, written by Edward G. White. The track was from a British stock music production library known as the Chappell Recorded Music Library which was sold through a New York agency called Emil Ascher. The tune's original title referred to a British steam locomotive. (This tune was used on other programs on both sides of the Atlantic. For example, two years before Captain Kangaroo, it served as the wrap-up music for an episode of the radio program Rocky Fortune called "Murder Among the Statues", starring Frank Sinatra.) The "Puffing Billy" theme played as the opening of each episode, with the music continuing until the Captain hung his large ring of keys on a nail (which seemed to act as a switch to turn off the music). If the Captain's keys ever slipped off the nail, the music would begin playing again.

In 1957, lyricist Mary Rogers penned lyrics to the tune, creating a newly titled Captain Kangaroo song.

In 1974, a new theme song was composed for Captain Kangaroo, written by composer Robert L. Brush. As the new theme used similar melodic elements from the original theme, Edward G. White's name was added to the song credits.

Much later, around the 1980s, Schoolhouse Rock mainstay Lynn Ahrens (who composed and performed a few CK songs herself), composed a new theme, entitled "Here Comes Captain Kangaroo."
