Yes it's very strange. Those that say the condition is universal or "just natural" can look at France, or even England where even the people who live in impoverished circumstances speak (and one would suppose spell) with conventional language. In the United States, we even had the idiotic episode of teaching "Ebonics" (written and spoken ethnic-based slang English) in schools as a second language. And of course there's the evolution of "Text-Speak".

I don't know. It's like age six speaking and spelling (let alone Grade 6); phonetic and aimless, is OK. But the fact is, this is a precursor to other social difficulties because, bottom line, it shows that the person doesn't really care if others that aren't in their immediate circle understand them or not. It's not mean, it's just "I don't give a damn about anyone that doesn't come from where I'm from". It's easy to see that all kinds of tribalistic behavior can stem naturally from this.

Example: I happen to live in New York City. Yesterday, I had to deliver a cat to a person living in Queens, in an 'ethnic neighborhood'. Getting directions, I asked the name of the nearest major street. "Rufelt", said the person on the phone. I said I didn't know where that was. ""Evvybody know where Rufelt is," she said. So I asked her to spell it. Sounding irritated at how stupid I was, she staccatoed this:
"R-O-O-S-E-V-E-L-T. Rufelt."
