Why do many people settle for looking like sh*t?

I'm not talking about anything extravagent, just looking presentable.

I know we have bad times, like a few months after having a baby or surgery, I'm not talking about that.

isn't health important too? Letting yourself go doesn't mean you stop brushing your hair, putting lipstick on and putting designer clothing on, how about letting yourself go as far as diet and exercise leading to inactivity and poor health?

thank you sacha, it's funny how other people think I am "judging." I'm asking a question to understand people's behavior, how is that judging?

People put on the outside what they feel on the inside.. And you can see a lot of folks here use kids, work or they just don't care etc.. as excuses... The real answer is they are lazy and or plain and simple have a poor self image.... Image is everthing in our society, so slobs get to a shrink and get yourselfs together if not for you for your kids.... You think your kids will be proud of a slob???? Hey lady trust me you have time to brush your teeth, just put the fork down once in a while.

There are far more important things in life to worry about other than how a person presents themselves. Sorry, but I am not going to waste precious minutes or hours in my day to apply makeup and making sure that all of the hairs on my head are in the right spot. There are so many other things that you can be worrying about than what another looks like. If you dont like the way that they look, then dont look at them!

Some people did not grow up in a home where "looking presentable" was a priority, so this is what they know unless they do something different. Others just don't have the confidence to look their best. You may not understand this, as you appear to want to look your best. But your judgment of others looking like crap is really an unnecessary one. You do not know what is going on in that person's life, so why judge?

Some people have money and lots of it I was at one time rich but I'm not now... I don't have 21,000.00 dollars for a hair replacement... I am 48 years old I'm a man I have lost weight, Had all of my teeth fixed "when i had insurance".... If you are using your real picture you are a pretty woman...
Me I got older as you will be one day.
I love beauty just like most people do I work in security and I get to see people that have a mouth full of rotten teeth, No money no education, I see homeless people that stink. smell very bad.
So why is this happening in America the Beautiful?
I took a chance the other day when I was out and spoke to a very good looking woman and to my suprise we talked and had a wonderful time I have been married to good looking woman dated good looking woman and have been lucky to get to know them I love them all.
We are so hung up on looks I like my apartment to be clean at all times I'll be working a (20) hour shift starting on christmas day..... I have owned my own business, Been in management several times so I'm not a dummy...I have learned to show love and kindness when getting none of it in return..... I'm bald on top and Sometimes I worry about that...
However I still meet wonder women and I like them ...thay like me. Some people have not so nice clothes because of lack of money but they are clean So why do people look like S H I t That's a good question some may have too the ones that don't have to don't thank you for your question i hope this helps Dear have and awsome day

a lot of it is about not having time , your metabolisim slows down as you get older. You always on the run .. eat junk food just cause you are to tired to cook... then you go out for a nice meal and over eat, depression is also a big thing... when you are down you are just out ...

I let myself go ( bad eating habits ) for a few months.but i started back on track yesterday.....

being in my 30's to stay thin i have to eat 1000 calories a day that isnt hardly anything.....but i do not want a wide ***

most of the time i do not care about what i look like when i go out..... just because i need to focus on point A to B..,,,,,,,,,

but i sure do clean up well...... when i have time.

I hate it when people do that. I really hate it when girls dress in crappy sweat pants and everything, with their hair thrown up. I mean, every now and then a girl can pull it off, but I hate when girls don't brush their hair, or take the time to put a little bit of makeup on, if they need it.

Because there are so many other things in life than being vain. Like being a good parent, son, daughter etc. Vanity takes too much time and does not make a person feel good about themselves in the long run. Besides, if I try to look my best isn't that saying everyone else looks second best? Furthermore I think that is what is wrong with today's young women they are forced by society's views to "look their best" and it is creating a very unhealthy generation.

some people think they look good just they way they are with no need to change anything. They have not been shown what presentable is or held to a standard that is required. for instance walking around with boxers hanging out, yes while this makes a statement is it the one that you want to make? What is the standard that society will except? and will you follow it or just do hwat you feel.

Because looks are not important, kidness and love are more important.

What 'looks best' is very subjective anyway and there is no good way to define it, though people try of course. Chasing after looks almost always ends in disaster.

The worst kind of ugliness in the world is ugly thinking.

Sometimes we fall into ruts where we just don't care. So many other things we are caring about that our appearance just doesn't rank up there.
I've gone through this.
Thing is: Once we take a day and just get ourselves cleaned up, dolled up and looking fine, we feel better.
It's just sometimes...Making ourselves do it.
