Because they are following a pagan tradition blatantly stolen by christianity

Its a celebration of nature. (a kind of odd human style of celebration by cutting down a tree and brining it indoors but back in the old days when it started there were more trees and fewer people)

P.S. - The custom actually originated in pre-Christian Germany and Scandanavia but England is close enough.

well...this sounds kinda a little weird, it's just to have something to do that the whole family can help with, it doesnt really have anything to do with christmas 'cept for the word in it

Because they think it's pretty with lights and other things on it. Some would probably leave it up all year if people woudn't think they were weird.
