You know why... it's because "heads up" means to be on the lookout for an incoming projectile, and we don't always duck. Sometimes we step aside, jump, pivot, or make an awesome catch.

The term 'heads up' is actually a term of wartime ... it means there is incoming fire we need to be aware of so that when we 'duck' we don't still get hit ...
