I imagine it varies from district to district... some are more formal in their inquiries. I know that some who have petitioned do not have these types of inquiries, just an interview that meets with the petitioner.
to some other responses:
* if you don't understand why someone would check your credit rating, crimilar record, etc... than you haven't been paying attention to the world for the past 50 years (or 5,000 for that matter...)
* i know people who have spent time in prison and are now freemasons
* the bible thing shouldn't get in your way, you have to have a belief in a supreme being, but your lodge should allow you to interpret this however you want (christian, jew, muslim, buddhist, hindu, spiritualist, animist, etc...) you have the right to use whatever sacred text you want - ask your uncle, he will know this
* i did not have to provide any personal or professional references
* just because you rejected them all doesn't mean everyone will or should - that is one of the important elements of freemasonry; and one of the founding masonic principles the USA was founded upon

as Worshipful Brother Donald G. said the Masonic Lodge doesn't do a criminal background check as such but in the Indiana Jurisdiction there is a question regarding this which must be answered. Generally speaking and I emphasize generally speaking if a person has a felony then the Masonic Lodge may not accept the petition without a complete and through investigation.
If you are referring to a Lady joining the Masonic Fraternity we do not recognize Co-Masons in the State of Indiana. There are many other Jurisdictions which are the same. So even if you are joining yourself there are many who will not recognize you as a " Mason " but if you are referring to joining the Eastern Star and have the qualifications then the Masonic Fraternity would welcome you as a " Sister. "

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://tinyurl.im/aH3YL
Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.
You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

I don't know about a background check, as this process is a fairly 'modern' one; however, I do know you can petition on your own. You must be recommended by a current Mason.
Generally, to be a regular Freemason, a candidate must be a man who comes of his own free will.
Believe in a Supreme Being. (The form of which is left to open interpretation by the candidate)
Be at least the minimum age (18–25 years old depending on the jurisdiction).
Be of sound mind and body (Lodges do not deny membership to a man because of a physical disability; this is largely a historical holdover, and if a potential candidate says there will be no problem, he will be taken at his word).
Be of good morals, and of good reputation.
Be free-born (or "born free", i.e. not born a slave or bondsman).[44] As with the previous, this is entirely an historical anachronism, and can be interpreted in the same manner as it is in the context of being entitled to write a will. Some jurisdictions have removed this equirement.
Have character references, as well as one or two references from current Masons, depending on jurisdiction.
Deviation from one or more of these requirements is generally the barometer of Masonic regularity or irregularity. However, an accepted deviation in some regular jurisdictions is to allow a Lewis (the son of a Mason), to be initiated earlier than the normal minimum age for that jurisdiction, although no earlier than the age of 18.
Some Grand Lodges in the United States have an additional residence requirement, candidates being expected to have lived within the jurisdiction for certain period of time, typically six months

The absolutely free reverse phone lookup sites generally provide the most basic of information such as name and it works only for landlines. To get further information, money will have to be paid. The free searches do not provide much more than what can be found through the phone book or personal knowledge and they only want your email to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse phone lookup sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse phone lookup site like http://unlimitedchecks.net/everify-308.html that has been around since 1999.
If I recall correctly they have two options:
1. Get only one report.
2. Get unlimited reports. I went with this option because I wanted to verify more numbers. This is how I caught my girlfriend cheating, I got the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and criminal-court records.

As a three time Past Master of my Masonic Lodge I assure you that we never did a criminal background check.
Perhaps it is different to-day.

So many organizations due a background check these days, including American Red Cross, even as a volunteer, however, we do not have to have a credit history check.
