In my opinion, I think that the AquaClear filiters from Hagen are the best aquarium filters there are. Instead of changing 1 filter cartridge, you change three at a time, resulting in less loss of the beneficial bacteria in your filter/aquarium. I have the AquaClear 30 model in my 10 gallon tank, and it is excellent! It traps all the waste, and the carbon removed the tannins leached by my driftwood. I usually have to clean the intake tube and impeller every two weeks, and it is worth it. I think the AquaClear filters are one of THE best filters on the market.

In my experience, the best filters you can get are Eheim filters. For a 10 gallon tank, you'll need the minimum of the Aquaball 2208.

A 10 gallon tank does not require a filter. The fishes need aerated water which is free of algae and other strange things.
The best PLACE for fresh water fishes is in fresh water. Get a book, look at the pictures forget about starting a fish zoo.
If you really NEED a fish tank, do your best to get educated regarding the care and feeding with rule #1 being to not kill them, flush them or otherwise cause them discomfort.

I have been keeping freshwater tropicals for over 35 years and have found undergravel filters do the job very well.
