Naming after a celebrity?
Think twice before you decide to name your child after a celebrity. If you really have a strong desire to do so, you can consider doing it. However, it’s clear that there are considerable risks. When making your decision, take into consideration that it isn’t you but your child that has to keep the name and that he or she is from a different generation than you are.

Going for a popular name?
If you decide to choose a popular name, don’t pick one of the top ten names of recent years. Choose one that’s slightly less popular. Find a happy medium and pick a name that’s not too unusual, but not too popular. There are various web sites that list the names chosen most often for each year. Avoid the top ten of the last five years and see if there are any names you like within the top 100 or 1000.

Naming After Someone Else?
Whether you should or shouldn’t name your child after someone else depends on your wishes completely. If you can’t agree on what to do, you can choose the middle ground by doing this with the second or third name. Or choose a name that is a derivation of the name of the person you wish to honor.

Don’t let others talk you into giving your baby a certain name. No matter how eager your mother(in-law) is to have the child named after her, only do so when both of you are one hundred percent sure of that choice. A name lasts a lifetime. The choice should not be made in haste, and should be made by parents in the child’s best interests... not your mother-in-law’s or any other’s.

Beware of Unusual Names:
Don’t make things too complicated! Even if you both manage to agree on a certain difficult name, think about the fact that your child will have to go through life with it. Time and time
again your child will have to spell his name and explain its meaning. At school, and also later at work, your child’s unusual name will make him feel like the odd one out.

Personally, I like to get online and choose names that are; a) foreign and b) no longer used. I also have a thing for names with the letters K or X in them for some reason...

Unfortunately, that is all the help I can offer you as I have certain names set aside for my next baby... I can't give them away :)

Good luck in your search
