Alpha Female

The female equivalent of the alpha male would seem to be the alpha female ... but, in truth, we should use those 'gender identifiers' only when appropriate. I was a psychologist, and was frequently offered positions of extreme 'importance' because of a 'slight mistake' people made. I was a 'gay psychologist' ... a psychologist who worked primarily with gays and lesbians on the problems they had BECAUSE they were gay, without assuming that 'gay' is 'sick' (they were fine, but their problems related to their sexuality). Was I gay? Most people assumed I was gay, too. In fact, I was and am 'straight' ... but I always wondered WHY people 'assumed' that 'gay' meant MY sexuality, when we do not usually put our sexuality in the same statement as our careers. I was the 'alpha' person in my field, because it was 'brand new' at the time (so new, that in fact I couldn't 'study it' in school, but had to do the 'research' myself and convince my professors it was valid research) ... but I usually took a 'back seat' because I felt that the positions offered to me would be better filled by people who were of the same sexuality as the organization they would be reperesenting. In MY case, it made sense. In the case of 'alpha male' or 'alpha female' it also makes sense, and in wolf populations (where the term 'alpha male/female' got started) ... but in today's society, I think it's a mistake to use the gender along with the status ... if we want 'equality in all things' then we need to stop identifying the gender and use 'across the board' standards to judge the 'alpha' from the 'omega.'
