P-town is Provincetown and it's not in New Hampshire but in Massachusetts.
Provincetown is the very last town on the tip of Cape Cod, a well known place, since the 1920s when it was discovered by a community of artists. It's a very hip small town.
There are wonderful beaches there, courtesy of the U.S. National Park Service (part of the Cape Cod National Seashore), good restaurants, and lovely views everywhere!
Provincetown is the first place the Pilgrims visited, but went further inland to Plymouth, Mass. Provincetown has a large Portuguese community, descended from fisherman, who seem to blend together with the large Gay population very well. There seems to be a lot of acceptance to go around, which is what makes Provincetown such a nice, welcoming place!
There is still a commercial fishing fleet out of Provincetown harbor, as well as a lot of tourist boating.
I've been there many times - it's my favorite place on Cape Cod. My kids and my husband and I have always felt more than welcome there!

Provincetown, Massachusetts is commonly called P-town. There is no place in New Hampshire known as P-town. Provincetown is located at the very top of Cape Cod.
P-town is notoriously known for it's alternative lifestyle residents (openly gay).
New Hampshire as whole is traditionally New England conservative, therefore the idea of Portsmouth being called P-town would be blasphemy.

These two sites give conflicting towns for the P-town name. The first has a photo of the P-town bridge in Portsmouth. The second site says it's Petersborough.
You could surf all day and probally come up with another 2 or 3 P-towns.
