No i don't think you do I don't on mine, I use windows vista and my pc will create and burn DVDs I have had to get DivX Player and converter for some movies that i've downloaded and i've also installed a vista codec package to convert movies so i can watch them on windows media player. I don't think so. You can use a DVD for recording anything, it is just high enough quality to read DVD. My suggestion is that if you don't want to make a DVD, that would play on a DVD player, just use CD-RW in data format. Then your wmv's will be condensed more, and they will still work on your computer.

It is kind of like collecting and burning music in mp3 format, for computer only use, or for storage. CD audio format is a step above what you need and takes up a lot more space, but you take it if you are using the disk in most regular sound systems (that don't read mp3).

No. If you are just backing them up, you can put them in any format you like. If you want to watch them on a DVD player, they will need to be in MPEG format, unless your DVD player supports DivX.
