My turtle has had this infection twice before, im 99% sure that its an ear infection. Is it right above or next to its neck. if it is then im sure its an ear infection. it could almost look like this on the side of its head ). For now no it is not contagious to your other turtles but for the health of the turtle that has the infection put it in a separate very clean, warm, and sanitary tank. It sounds like you have a type of painter. For the time you haven't gone to the vet wash the area softly with warm water, you can go to the pet store and pick up non antibiotic ear drops and eye drops. make sure you get ear drops not eye. Make sure your turtle is getting a good diet and plenty of nutrients and vitamins. A mixed diet of good fruits + veggies, lettuce, banana, tomato, plum, strawberry, peach and others plus good protein, slugs, worms, meal worms, wax worms, and other insects. Also make sure the tank has a very comfortable temperature and fresh water. Hope this helps. Good luck. :)

You absolutely MUST identify the species of turtle- this is the only way to know if it is getting the right cares and it also helps us figure out the swelling.

I am wondering if it is a Box Turtle? Does the shell on the belly (the plastron) fold up to let the turtle close up? If so, it is probably a Box Turtle. If the plastron is marked with a starburst pattern, it is probably an Ornate Box Turtle. If the plastron is plain or blotchy, it is probably a Eastern or one of the common subspecies.

The Three-toed, for example, is a subspecies of Eastern and has a plain shell (carapace), while the Eastern main species have yellow star-like pattens on the shell.

You can ID your turtle for sure at the World of Turtles gallery- http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/

The neck swelling is probably an abscess- a lump formed as the result of an injury or illness. They are not usually contagious, but the conditions that caused it are likely to cause it for the other turtles as well.

Sorry, but the only real way to treat an abscess is through surgically removing it and treating the turtle with prescription antibiotics. You need a vet for this. (It is not immediately life threatening so you can wait for normal office hours.)

However, you can reduce the chance of it happening with the other turtles and reduce the stress on the ill turtle by offering the turtles a good habitat.

The thing is, if you don't know what the species is, you simply CANNOT be offering it the right habitat, right cares, and right diet.

http://www.austinsturtlepage.com is a good starter site for cares in general once you know the species.
