I have a GPA of a 2.5 and a 980 on the SATS and i really want to attend the University of Arizona and I was wondering what you think my chances are of getting in. I'm out of state and was sick throughout highschool which i plan on explaining in my essay. I did cheerleading and lacrosse and some community service.

thanks.

No, offense, but any college would need to see more evidence of your ability to do well than you have shown with this. You say you were sick throughout high school, for which I am really sorry, but my first thought was, "But not sick enough that she could do cheerleading and lacrosse?" Therefore, I would have to wonder why you didn't do better! It is usually harder for out-of-state students to get into a school than it is for in-state residents, since public universities are set up to serve the needs of their local residents. Therefore, in order to be admitted as an out-of-state student, you would have to show that you can bring up the standards of the school as a whole. Unfortunately, only 4% of the University of Arizona's students had GPAs in your range - the rest were much higher, and one can presume that those who did had things like SAT scores more than double what yours are.

My recommendation to you would be that you go to a community college for two years and,if you do well, apply as a junior transfer student. The illness cannot continue to be an excuse. If you have a chronic condition, it is too bad, but that is a condition you are going to have to overcome in order to be accepted by a strong college. They won't believe that you will suddenly change your academic habits after so many years of NOT doing well. Right now your chances are pretty much 0%, but you can overcome this in two years.

I'd say you have a pretty good shot. But it depends on the degree program you want to get into. I had the same background as you, got straight As throughout high school and little to no extracurriculars because I was working. I made up for that with good ACT and SAT scores. I would recommend you focus on your ACT and SAT tests and make sure to get good scores. Also look at the school's website and see what the requirements are for the specific program you want to be in. For the business school at ASU which I went to, they had a minimum score you had to get on the tests and such. Some programs don't have any requirements at all. Also the classes in high school you take matter and they might take that into account. But if you have good grades you shouldn't have an issue. In my experience at ASU, getting in was a given I dind't even have to worry about it. Their acceptance rate is ridiculously high. With about 70,000 students there you can see that they don't reject many people. If you plan on going to a university in Arizona I would suggest looking at community college too to take your general education classes and electives. You will save a lot of money and Arizona universities have announced huge price hikes in tuition lately. I managed to get out of college debt free because I went to MCC (Mesa Community College) for 2 years and then went to ASU for my degree program. And ASU has a deal with MCC to transfer all credits over. Good luck!

I know i'm a little late, but you have a chance at being accepted. 18% of the freshman class had a gpa between 2.0 and 2.5 collegesearch.collegeboard.com
