That version is close to the book ending.Read the book version. That is almost how the book ends. The hero returns to Earth, and finds that apes rule this planet not just the alternate Earth. The first version of the movie is one of the few examples of a movie being better than the book.I hated the book it was so-so compared to the movie.

I kinda figured it was some twist to the space/time thing. I read the wikipedia link...interesting.
I liked the new movie a lot, but I liked the ending in the original better. It's hard to imagine the Earth's dominant species turning out to be apes and that their culture mirrored humans right down to the city skylines and motorcycles. The original Ape movies told the story in retrospect with each sequel. It's more "believable" in the original movies that humans were the architects of their own destruction.
Tim Burton is known for his different approach on things, and for the most part it's refreshing. I liked Batman but wasn't crazy about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Matter of fact the new Batman movie screws up the story line of the first one (with Micheal Keaton and Jack Nicholson).

the apes rule the planet....i know i am thinking there has to be a sequel right. But no sequel to the book so no sequel planned for the movie. It is open for you to write a good ending
